The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is considering a gondola system as a solution to traffic issues in Little Cottonwood Canyon. However, some argue that implementing measures like enhanced busing, tolls, restrictions on single occupancy vehicles, and public transportation hubs should be the first step to gauge their effectiveness before investing in a gondola system. Concerns about the gondola include its potential negative impact on the watershed, the environment's vulnerability to drought and climate change, equity issues regarding funding allocation, and doubts about its long-term effectiveness in addressing congestion amidst population growth. The opposition prefers a phased approach without the gondola and any plan to widen the canyon road, contrary to labeling it as a "do nothing" approach.
