In the article “The Truth About Recycling,” I learned that recycling is actually meaningless and the world is getting overrun by plastic waste. The latest numbers from E.P.A. show that in 2018, 27 million tons of U.S. plastic ended up in landfills. Some of this plastic material is helping save lives creating long-lasting devices like helmets for firefighters and soldiers. However most plastic waste ends up in nature. Harming our wild animals while most plastic ends up in the oceans.

I think the truth about recycling isn’t really known or aware of by Americans. The marketing is making things worse by making people they can use plastic products without damaging the planet. Many people should be more aware that even if these plastic products have a recycling symbol its not guaranteed that these items are recycled. The government needs to enact policies that force companies to take responsibility. Americans also need to take part and make better decision when shopping and change their consumption habits. We can all ask ourselves questions when thinking about purchasing plastic like.

Do you really need that plastic bottle of water?

I totally agree. There are so many other options like Brita filtering bottles. Or reusable/refillable water bottles, which you can keep for years.

Ashley, I enjoyed your post about plastic and recycling. Often times I think we, as humans, believe that it is okay to use plastic as long as we recycle it when we finish. I think you are exactly right in saying that recycling symbols on the plastic do not guarantee that the item will be recycled. Everyone needs to be more mindful about the plastic they absolutely need versus want for convenience. Thank you for spreading awareness about this topic- I think it is extremely important to remember in our day-to-day lives.
