The tricky truth regarding body image and social media. Many of us believe that seeing attractive, often heavily-edited photographs of people on social media makes us feel bad about our own bodies. Have you ever considered how all those photos of other people’s bodies, whether from a friend’s vacation photo or a celebrity’s gym selfie, may be influencing your perception of your own? It’s worth noting that research into social media and body image is still in its infancy, and the majority of studies are correlational. Body-positive images may also have a drawback: they still focus on bodies. Nevertheless, there are also significant gaps in the studies on social media and body image. So far, the majority of the work has been concentrated on young people.
