In the article “Traffic Jam in Atlanta” by Kevin M.Kruse “What this traffic jam has to do with slavery is redlining. Because as you look the highway bridge is separating the two sides. On one side are the blacks and whites.” I feel like this because ever since back then slavery, racism and segregation played a big role during that time. So as those highways and bridges were being built the politics were getting those built on separting races.
The definition of “interest convergence” is depicted as white Americans’ ‘ those interests aligned with racially discriminatory urban planning. Major Historical events such as redlining, Interstate construction, were motivated by the desire to keep racial segregation going as long as possible and maybe forever. The proposed routing of Interstates and where to lead to were to prevent integration. The fighting back to transit solutions, how suburbs became racially diverse, whites using one transit and blacks using another, everything just being separated. It suggests a divergence of interests, as some said no to inclusive policies due to racial biases. Kevin’s narrative underscores how racial discrimination in urban planning served the interests of white Americans.
Now analyzing Kevin’s view and how he looks at everything. I agree with his point of view but i don’t think he is diving in deep enough and bringing everything to light. Because under everything he says he’s only scraping the surface. He needs to go in deeper and explain the backstory of why the roads are that way. Also needs to explain what urban planning does and how it affects the people.
