Anthony Mariano Arellano is not just my name. It makes up who I am. Where I come from. It makes me feel like myself and it makes me take on a part of my roots with me everyday.
Anthony may sound like a normal name to you. However, I have gotten different nicknames from it. Tony. Ant. Most people call me Tony which is what I am used to. Ant, on the other hand, is more unique. It makes me think of the insect, but it is an original nickname. I hardly get called Anthony, so it feels weird when people call me Anthony.
Mariano, my middle name, is also very special to me because it comes from my “Mama Cuca” or Maria del Refugio, my paternal grandmother. She is as fearless as a soaring eagle and I am overjoyed to take on part of her name because she is a blessing in my life and someone who looks out for me to this day. She is as strong as iron bands.
I take on Arellano with great pride. I am proud to be able to carry on my dads last name because he is the strongest person I know. He has a heart of stone and I believe that makes him even stronger. I am proud of my last name and I know that my future family will also feel proud when they take on the name Arellano.
Even though I feel more connected to my middle name and last name, my first name also has a lot of meaning behind it. Anthony. A means active, full of energy. N is for neat and organized. T is for tactful. H is for heroic, standing out to help. O is for outstanding. N is for nurturing, caring for others. Y is for Yes, believing in myself. My name can mean whatever I want it to mean for me and that allows me to feel as in control as a guard.
Overall, my name gives me strength. My name has roots that come from strong people and I know I will follow in their footsteps. I am very proud of having part of them in my name, it really means a lot and this same pride will be something I will pass down to my kids.
“A means active, full of energy. N is for neat and organized. T is for tactful. H is for heroic, standing out to help. O is for outstanding. N is for nurturing, caring for others. Y is for Yes, believing in myself.” — What a lovely, amazing line! So you 🙂

Dear Tony,
I am grateful for being able to read your blog on the meaning of your name. One sentence you wrote that really stands out to me is “Anthony may sound like a normal name to you. However, I have gotten different nicknames from it. Tony. Ant. Most people call me Tony which is what I am used to. Ant, on the other hand, is more unique. It makes me think of the insect, but it is an original nickname. I hardly get called Anthony, so it feels weird when people call me Anthony.”. This stands out to me because you sound proud of your name and your nicknames especially. Another part that stood out to me was how you explained letter by letter what it means to you. Thank you for writing. I look forward seeing what you write next, because your a good writer.
Dear tonya,
I really liked your piece because it brought tears to my eyes. This was a very unique way or writing out your own meaning of your name especially the part where you took apart the letters. This was inspiring, emotional, and it made me feel closer to you. Great work!
