The article “School Social Media Free Speech Case” states that a fourteen year-old highschool student expressed herself in social media about not making the varsity cheerleading team. The school was not happy about what the student uploaded into her social media because of the included curse words and image of her and friend raising their middle fingers. School punished the student from all cheerleading events for a year. Even though the student wasn’t in school campus when the post was posted, the school still interfered with her freedom of speech and then the parents of the student filed a lawsuit with the school. The school appealed the case, thinking that they should have the right to regulate online student speech on an off-campus. The student still had the Supreme Court.
I believe that the student shouldn’t have made the decision but the school shouldn’t have interfered either. The student was immature and did not think about what she was doing. The school shouldn’t have interfered with the students decision because that is her freedom of speech, she is expressing her feelings and she is not harming anyone.
If you were part of the Supreme Court, what would your vote be? Why?
