In the first article I summarized, I tried to prove the point that the drug war was unnecessary and was actually more of a burden than it was helpful. I showed the many benefits of legalizing/decriminalizing drugs and focusing more on how to rehabilitate addicts, as opposed to putting them in prison. In the most recent article that I annotated on NowComment, I asked, what are the benefits of keeping drugs illegal, and the article told me very bluntly: drugs are illegal because they kill people, and we need to keep them illegal to stop them from killing people. The issue I found with this statement is that drugs are killing people no matter if it is illegal or not, and that maybe if we focused more on rehabilitation instead of incarceration, less people would die.
