Should community service be a requirement for everyone?

First of all, I want to give out the definition of Community service, “Community service is when you work for free to help benefit the public or your community.” I understand that community service is helpful for people who need help. It is a great way for us to give back to our community and society. We often do our services during our leisure time. However, community service takes time and effort for us to do it and sometimes we are lack of energy and time.

Some schools or even some companies make community service a requirement. For example, in our school, there are different requirements for students in each grade such as seniors need to do 45 hours of volunteer work until the end of the year. Since volunteer work is so influential and many institutions see that as a really important thing to do, I want to know more about how can community service shape us and how can both sides get benefits through community service. In other words, what are positive effects of community service.

From researches, I understand more about community service. Community service is not only beneficial to those people who need help, but also beneficial to the people who are doing the volunteer work from different aspects – school, personal development, health, community, college, professional, etc. Here is a specific example for personal development benefit, “volunteers discover hidden talents that may change your view on your self worth”. In conclusion, we do gain benefits from that and we make a huge impact by doing so.
