Art statements
In my shadow box there are 10 objects inside that represent counter narratives the real me and on the outside of my box there are the dominant narratives (the stereotypes about me). When people look at me, they assume that I’m Mexican because of my assigned identity the way I look. In reality I’m from Ecuador and Guatemala that’s what the two flags represent inside my shadow box. I chose the color blue inside my shadow box because blue means freedom to me. And I’m a free spirited person. I put an airplane because it represents that I like to travel. The picture of my family means that I love them and all my sisters. I hope that look at my shadow box you learn my truths.

Dear Fernanda,
Hi my name is Jonathan and I am a student at SJSU. I enjoyed reading your post and learning more about you. I thought it was interesting that even though many people assume you are Mexican because of the way you look, you are actually Ecuadorian and Guatemalan. I like how you say you are a free spirited person and that you like to travel. I also love traveling even though I don’t do it very often. I like how you chose the color blue to represent freedom. I agree with that choice because blue is the color of the sky and there is nothing blocking you when you are up there.
Thank you for sharing!

Dear Fernada,
My name is Jenny and I go to SJSU, I love your shadow box and how it represents you. I can relate to your topic on how others perceive you to be a certain way but in reality, you are way more than that. I love the statement behind your shadow box and how you used the bolded words to explain to others about your truth vs what others think. I believe your shadow box made a really empowering statement and message to others that what they see on the outside may or may not be the full truth, so its best to never jump to conclusions when it comes to identifying who one is.

Sincerely,
Jenny

Dear Fernanda,
To begin, I am very happy that you don’t believe in the stereotypes people put upon you, and that you realize your self worth! I love the flags that you added and your pride for your culture. I love that you made your box blue, and that it represents freedom. The pictures of your family really showed how much you value them. Keep your free spirit, it is a lifestyle that all people should have. Keep striving and remember to always believe in yourself!

Dear Fernanda:

I am intrigued by your artist statement form your, “Shadow Box” because of how the words match with the picture. Your piece of writing also is enlightening to me because I learned information that I was previously ignorant towards.

One quote that you wrote really stood out to me, it is: “I’m a free spirited person.” I think this is phenomenal because it conveys a lot about your personality and how you feel towards yourself. Free spirited is also just a really powerful message that in a way can be interpreted as someone who is strong minded that can be flexible and “free”.

Thanks for your writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because it can be more enlightening to everyone who reads your work. Your work is also short yet very powerful and that really catches peoples eyes. The addition of the picture you included also really helped me interpret your artist statement. (Xavier)
