The year 2020 was full of change. The nationwide protests that erupted after George Floyd’s death, It was definitely a Sight to see. It demonstrated the ferocity served as a vivid reminder of the problems people of color still face in the united states. One being the systemic inequity in our society. It was a powerful moment and a very rude awakening for many people. We were forced to see the ongoing destruction of people of color, and the unfair unjust treatment they face on the regular. this is a world problem, but more of a united states problem Than anywhere else. The 1619 Docu series sheds light on the issues people of color face, as well as the problems women of color face.
Yet, law enforcement frequently reacted to these protests in an unreasonable and unjustified manner. The police’s evident indication that these rallies were a threat rather than a lawful expression of first amendment rights was the use of heavily armed personnel, helicopters, and other military-grade tools. The incident involving the person who was allegedly targeted by sharpshooters for merely utilizing a megaphone to address an officer served as further evidence of this. This amount of force raises serious concerns regarding the use of excessive force by law enforcement.
Accountability is a critical issue that also has to be addressed. The lack of sanctions for violent or unlawful behavior by police personnel is a pervasive problem that has existed for far too long. The FBI’s classification of individuals as “Black identity extremists” and treatment of them as terrorist organizations is quite worrying since it only serves to perpetuate prejudicial perceptions and isolate already marginalized populations.
The most is being done by about 30 police officers and helicopters.
The fact that so many people have united to call for change and hold those in positions of authority responsible is heartening. It is impossible to exaggerate the effectiveness of group effort and nonviolent protest. Nonetheless, it is discouraging that development is so sluggish and that systemic injustices continue to cause suffering for such a large number of people. Derrick Ingram’s story is only one illustration of the ongoing injustices that exist despite the efforts of several activists and organizations.
In the end, it’s critical to keep advocating for change and working toward a better future for everyone. Even though development could be sluggish, every step in the correct direction is a progressive step. We must continue to be vigilant in demanding justice and equality from those in positions of authority, holding them accountable, and working to create a more just and equitable society for all.
When it comes to ensuring that your voice is heard, speaking out for yourself and owning your truth are crucial, but when you do both of those things and still don’t receive recognition, it can leave you feeling helpless.
Investigating the legacy of slavery in the United States and its ongoing effects on American culture is The 1619 Project, developed by journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones and released by The New York Times in 2019. The second installment of the project, “The Economy that Slavery Created,” explores how African women’s bodies and labor were vital to the growth of the American economy.
Rocking With women of color
Black women were coerced into reproducing and providing free labor for white slave owners, resulting in enormous wealth for the plantation class. Despite the atrocities of slavery, Black women discovered ways to resist the dominance of their bodies. To resist the slave economy’s exploitation of their reproductive capabilities, some women engaged in covert resistance, such as intentionally miscarrying or refusing to have children.
Other Black women resisted by engaging in combat with their oppressors. For instance, former slave Harriet Tubman rose to prominence as the head of the Underground Railroad, a system of shelters and labyrinthine paths that helped oppressed people escape to freedom. Many times, Tubman risked her life to assist others in escaping the cruel conditions of slavery.
Black women today employ political organizing and activism to protest the supremacy of their bodies. Black women’s groups, like BLM and the Movement for Black Lives, focus on the needs and experiences of Black women, who are typically disregarded in discourses of racial justice in the media. These groups support causes including reproductive justice, economic equality, and police reform, all of which are essential in dismantling the structures that uphold white supremacy. Then there is the dominance of black women’s bodies.
Those who were under slavery had nothing, but as we advance and improve our lot in life, we battle ceaselessly to hold onto what we have.
I like that you talked about the event from 2020 to relate to the films.
