This Project was about creating/ trying to make a change in the community with an issue that is most common. So we try to spread the word within the school and the community. The way we did it is by informing students, teachers and community members. The actions we took were putting posters in the middle school hallways to grab attention. We also put flyers around our science building and the high school hallways in both english and spanish. The flyers will bring attention to parents about their child’s health. We also wanted to bring awareness by using social media so other communities will know and we also posted on youth voices. Overall, this project was about raising our voices towards our issues.

Being an upstander means to me now that I have to help my community in being aware of little and big things that some might not really care. Also, becoming an upstander help me also reflect from the decisions I make for me and the community.

What I learn about myself as a student in this project is to educate myself more about what goes around not only about social media but community in my community. What I learn as a person is caring for others and making them aware and educate others.

What I learn as a upstander is to make sure people actually listens to you. To make your voice heard and show the community that you care which then will make the community care too. Bring awareness is pretty heard especially if you don’t have much support from the people you want for example. My issue is child obesity if children/ teens don’t want to make a change with what they eat then what change am I creating? But I know that being an upstander you can experience people against you and have allies. In my case from my presentation I saw that a lot of people actually got interested in learning more about the issue.

The next steps I want to take are to make meetings where I can talk to parents about how to limit the amount of food their child eats and what kind of food they also eat. I’ll like in the future to go and actually help people choose what to buy for their family. In the future I want to be a nurse practitioner so this might give the chance to tell my patients to eat healthier and what food they should buy and stop buying.

My advice to those who want to be an upstander is to actually have a goal and be passionate about what they want the community to know. To not only do temporarily not for a short period amount of time then stop there’s so many opportunities for you to make a change. First off it will be hard and you’ll probably think is not making a difference but there might be people that your words and work will affect them. Be happy for what your standing for a make your voice be heard, your words are bigger from what society thinks!
