In our American history class we are researching contemporary issues and designing ways that people can take action and improve our community. Our group is focused on Racial profiling among latinos . This issue is important because it causes fear and stereotypes among the community This issue is complicated because it is caused by Police and simple minded people . However, we need to address it because it has serious effects like breaking up the community and culture and making it harder for latinos to find work later on ending back in prison It also has the long term effect of making it difficult for people to learn about our beautiful Culture. To address this issue, we think that people should learn about our culture from people who actually live and are latinos and to throw out all the negative things they heard of out the window. Some people might oppose this idea because they don’t want to be problem wrong and they don’t want to change their minds about the reality of how beautiful the culture is. To raise awareness about racial profiling among Latinos we would have a petition of who would attend the workshops. We have made a prototype that is a petition Please give us any feedback you have about our prototype to help us improve it to help raise awareness about this important issue. ( Our petition is below)
One colossal issue that we have in our community is Racial Profiling on Latinos and it’s not receiving enough attention and solutions for this issue. An article that we read shows the the attention about racial discrimination is mostly on white people and African American people and not on Latinos even though they face the same racial discrimination
The origin of this problem is the media portrays us as immigrants, alcoholics, gang bangers, drug suppliers and the main reason that we have all these problems is because of racism.
This causes an increase of unnecessary fear through the latino community because of stereotypes that the media and close minded people. This leads to higher jail rate and harsher sentencing .
When latinos are charged with a crime it is harder to find a job and making a higher chance of them turning back to crime |
|
A solution we as in our group have come up with is to acquire volunteers to educate people the reality of how the latino community is being treated by cops and the media is portraying them. We would educate them by having workshops and talking to the police and the media up front of the positive side of our culture. |
Dear Elias, I am very excited to hear more about your petition because I completely agree that the latino culture is being oppressed and something does need to happen about it. One sentence that you wrote that stands out to me is”This issue is complicated because it is caused by Police and simple minded people.” Iḿ not completely sure if I agree on this because not all is caused by the police and I don´t know who simple minded people are. Another sentence that stood out to me is when you were talking about starting a group that would help educate people on how the latino community really is. Thank you for your post about latinos.I look forward to your next post.
When you do your presentation, try to not be biased. People found it very difficult to actually have good understandings, because they don’t get much access to Latino culture. While in the reality, people are so busy with their personal lives. You need to explain more clearly about how Latinos might end up to prison if they weren’t be able to find a job. Your post is related to so many different huge topics, such as racism, stereotyping against Latinos.Good luck
That is a very strong way to start writing about a clear issue on what it is that is happening. Although, I really like how you mention that people are ” close minded” because if you would of used ” ignorant” it would sound like an insult. I can feel your passion and your determination of having ethnic studies and I totally agree with it. In fact, having ethnic studies in high school will be great to also mention. Think about it but other than that good job!
Great start, but please explain more on how racism is a major reason why latinos are ” immigrants, alcoholics, gang bangers, drug suppliers”. There wouldn’t be racism in the first place if latinos never did such things but the ugly truth is that because latinos were all grown into a bad community like most latinos, they tend to mostly all grow up and learn from people who they are around and in a bad neighborhood there is a high chance not many of those latinos were up to any good. Meaning racism wasn’t the major reason why they are all doing bad but it influences others non latino to basically describe ALL latinos the same. Racism had to begin with actions many of our past generations have done to have gotten us stuck with the all stereotypes. Other than that everything looks good.
I love how you really care about your Latino people/culture. I can actually relate to this because I’ve been doing my senior project about how students should have the ability to learn about their ethnic culture. But, overall I feel that your beginning to very strong and it gets straight to the point. A petition would be great but you can also use the media to raise awareness pretty fast. I do agree that this is a huge issue, knowing the fact that many people only hear the bad about someones culture. Instead of saying “people” be more specific about which group of people it would affect. But I love the idea of this. Great job.
In my personal opinion you guys had a very strong start. I liked how you explain the racial discrimination but you lost me when you said “simple minded people” you maybe got too excited and that is why you started insulting others, which would not help your cause because you are specifically talking about discriminating a certain group people… maybe try not to be too biased and try to look at the problem from a non-biased perspective. Everything else seems to be good, you just need to explain where the money will come from to pay all those programs that you guys listed above.

I think this is a really good start and you can tell you can you’re passionate, however be careful not to insult people “simple minded people” is a little harsh try and get your point across without insulting people because it will make your argument stronger! I agree this is a huge issue good luck!
Good start overall. To strengthen your petition, continue to explain the issue more; petitions can be a way to educate the people you circulate it to, as well as the people you send it to once it has signatures. Consider the complexity of the issue more: “caused by police and simple minded people” does not really deal with why people have those stereotypes. You should also clarify what specifically the petition is asking for or demanding, and who it is ultimately for. Is it for the local government? Media outlets? A community organization that you would want to take on your solution?
