In the article, “Prohibit Assault” (Everytown.org 2023) I learned that assault weapons are extremely dangerous and if we prohibit them, it will prevent a lot of massacres from happening in the future. In support of their central idea, the author writes,  “Assault weapons are generally designed to fire rounds at a greater rate than other firearms, and when combined with high-capacity magazines, they enable a shooter to fire more rounds over a short period.” The author also writes, “Another study found state assault weapons prohibitions are associated with a lower likelihood of an active shooter event.” These pieces of evidence backs up the central idea because it demonstrates that assault weapons are dangerous and that if we can get some limitations against assault weapons, there wouldn’t be as many shootings happening in the United States.

I personally think that gun violence in the United States is a huge problem. I really like the idea of prohibiting assault weapons in the U.S. because of all these tragic events that are taking place in our country right now. This helps me answer one of my research questions because I could now understand why people want to get rid of weapons.

A question I still have is, if people that own guns see how dangerous these weapons are and how many mass shootings there are, how come they don’t think to ban them like the rest of the people in America?
