In the first image, in the top left, you can see the empty flower pot that I bang on at 7:00 PM each evening. I’m thanking all of the front-line workers who are working hard to keep us all safe. But we are also yelling, “We are still here!” It an affirmation of life continuing. In the two minutes of this clapping, I feel amused, encouraged, angry, fearful, grateful, and worried. It’s a microcosm of this crisis, repeated daily.
On the top right is a picture of the sewing materials my wife and I used to make masks to wear when we venture outside. I just followed the design and steps that she read from a guide for making masks published in the New York Times shortly after the CDC changed its recommendations to advising people to wear them.
And on the bottom: This is the room where I spend most of my time during the lockdown. The other important things you can see here are my running clothes, my computer, and my couch, all essential equipment for keeping close to normal during this crisis.
