In 1980, migration was estimated at 128 million people around the world, today this figure has doubled, with 280 million migrants around the world in 2020 alone. The current migration figures are alarming, even more so when the doubts about the resources used to shelter these people increase every day, this is when the question about the integration of these people into the community becomes more relevant. Of course, reaching a new culture is not easy for both those who migrate and for the locals, therefore here we question what path should be followed to build a united, safe and supportive community.

For me, each migrant must be not only accepted but integrated into their new society. For this, certain protocols must be followed, such as evaluating a possible benefit that this attracts to everyone and not turning migration into a social problem, specifically in what it entails. the House.

Below I will explain what I consider to be a way that is not only fair but quite humanitarian to provide a home, this is what I call a home that we build in society, in this scheme foreigners who like to stay are welcome and are offered a place to live with the condition that this new home is built with their own hands and the help of the community, in this way people work and build their own home without leaving the work to others, likewise by working with the community the community is developed. empathy and the sense of community that will keep society together.

In this case the government is the one who pays for the materials and in specific cases hires professional workers in the construction of the home, this is paid through organizations and community taxes, once the new citizens are established and are integrated, By lending bank law, they must help build a home for new residents.

My own experience

Migrating requires many sacrifices that are not easy to make, forgetting the future that we had planned to build a new one, learning how to love new people, new foods, new places, and above all, dealing with those thoughts that scream out for you to return, to come back to your comfort zone, your community.

But is community really something that stays in our country of origin, or perhaps it is a flash of light that we carry within us and that we can rebuild anywhere., Hhere is my own experience when I moved to New York, United States, from Bogota, Colombia.

First of all my arrival was quite turbulent., Iin Colombia, I assumed that I would adapt quickly, and iIt certainly did, but not in the way I thought I would.

I arrived in New York to spend a few days at my aunt’s house, she planned to get a room near her home for us, so we would be close and feel safer;, however, getting a job for my mother was complex, and without money we couldn’t rent ano place, and after 15 days staying at my aunt’s home, the tensions were almost exploding.

So it was that overnight my mother found out about some temporary shelters where they gave you housing without charge., Iit didn’t take her long to prepare things even though my aunts recommended not to do so. So we ended up in a hotel in Brooklyn. It was incredible for me at first, as soon as I arrived and explored New York I really wanted to live in Brooklyn one day;, coincidentally, life coincided with my desire, only in a particular way.

I lived in that hotel for 9 months, and not a single day did I feel part of a community.;, I felt like a number., I had free housing and I was offered food, but I felt that I had to give up my freedom in exchange., I was grateful but it was not happy. I started to felt a real integration in my school, especially my teachers, who supported and understood me since I arrived. In every class I have taken I have felt honest work and the desire to help me improve both in the language and in my grades. The friendships that I slowly gathered also played a fundamental role., this is when my idea of integration into a community makes sense.

My place, a space for me in this new country, was not something that was rented to me or that I decided to buy, but rather I built it with the people who were willing to help and support me in this process. The home I now own was created with a foundation of struggle, love, and hope for a better tomorrow;, a hope given to me by the wonderful souls who believed in me.
