I really liked how you somehow tied in Chinese culture into American values and problems. One sentence that really stood out was when you said that “An outside look can sometimes give you insight otherwise impossible to get.” I think this is insightful because people need to learn to see things through different lenses and need to…[Read more]
Laura Ruby’s novel, Bone Gap, features a tight-knit community in Illinois. Everybody knows everybody’s business, and when Finn’s inability to stop Roza’s kidnapper everyone knew. They tormented him with name ca
Hey Thomas! I really enjoyed your article. I made me think more about the ideas of being an outcast and having to look at everything on the outside. I can’t imagine what it would feel like to live in a town that spreads such rumours and says very hateful things as you were saying in your essay. I did feel like you sort of just talked about the book and you could have gone more into how these experiences happen in real life and effect a great number of people. Great essay!
Hi there Thomas,
This sounds like an extremely interesting novel that I would love to read! This made me think about the puzzle pieces that make up all of the different communities we are all part of. I would love to hear more about how this book applies to the real world and how we can apply it to our daily lives.

I really liked how you made your point, then had a firm argument for that certain point. Your post’s flow of ideas was really smooth and it was easy to tell what position you stood for and why. All of your claims were clearly justified and you really figured out the nuances of your argument. Each claim that you made was thought…[Read more]
American culture, values, and creeds are all have different meanings to Americans. They are what makes you different from someone else, but there are values that everybody feels are important, freedom and
Thomas, I agree with you that every American has the right to have different values, creeds, or culture. I understand that not everyone is the same and some people may value different things. Your conclusion was very strong but I don’t completely agree with it. Do you think if the government lets everyone come in American undocumented, how would America look like? Would it still be the same? https://explore.proquest.com/sirsissuesresearcher/document/2266089196?accountid=35549
This is a youth-powered publishing platform that was started in 2003 by a group of teachers from local sites of the National Writing Project.
We merged several earlier blogging projects. We have found that there are many advantages to bringing students together in one site that lives beyond any particular class. It’s easier for individual students to read and write about their own passions, to connect with other students, comment on each other’s work, and create multimedia posts for each other. Further, it’s been exciting for us to pool our knowledge about curriculum, connected learning, and digital literacies.
There are over 8,000 posts and over 13,000 comments by young people on the site on topics as diverse as the American Dream, Shakespeare, and sports as well as original poems and stories.
Youth Voices is a platform for youth to write about their interests, both in school and outside of school: what they are reading, what their hobbies or future careers might be, what they enjoy in their spare time. Like all of us, students follow our national leadership and form opinions. They are also welcome to write about those topics as well.
Youth Voices is fully non-partisan and welcomes youth of all types, from all regions, and with all viewpoints. Educators support youth in writing and thoughtfully responding to each other through the use of commenting guides, using tags to show common interests, playlists to support self-guided inquiry; opinions expressed by writers are their own.
If being part of such a community makes sense to you, we invite you to join us. We welcome all youth and any teacher interested in having students publish online and participate in the give and take of a social network like Youth Voices.
