There is much concern about ecological consequences of night time light pollution. There are five main management techniques for decreasing artificial light pollution. They are: preventing areas from being
Light pollution is a serious problem that threatens the environment and makes it difficult to see the stars. In addition, the fuel needed to generate electricity contributes to smog, acid rain, and greenhouse
I was really shocked by your findings Olivia. I knew light pollution affects being able to see stars in the night (unless you go to a rural area) but I was unaware off the negative influence on wildlife. I’m really interested in seeing what else you may be able to find including even solutions to light pollution.
Olivia I really enjoyed your article. I think it was well researched, and the statistics are very interesting. It is frightening to hear about the negative influences wildlife are experiencing. However, I am happy to hear that organizations are working to combat this. It isn’t a very well known threat, so thank you for educating me about it. I look forward to hearing more.
Climate change has been a hot topic in the news for a while now and you often see various “go green” campaigns encouraging people to be more conscious of how they affect the earth. But how much do these eff
Although climate change is a very real and scary thing, you post offers me a little hope. I hope that it is not too late to stop the Earth from deteriorating to levels we cannot come back from. It is nice to know that a few small actions that anyone can do can make a difference. I will be sure to instate some into my life. Thanks for this post. It is well researched and written, and I look forward to hearing more about this subject!
Olivia, I am interested to know what the long-term effects of climate change are. I’ve always heard that temperatures are increasing so drastically that the polar ice caps will melt and flood the earth. Is that right? Also, what’s the deal with recycling? I heard it doesn’t help at all. Is that true too? Should I just stop recycling then? I’ve heard so many different sides of this issue and the info seem to be changing daily; I really don’t know what to believe. I’ll try to do what you recommended but from what you say and from what little we are doing to change right now, I feel like I should start investing in a scuba suit or trying to grow gills.
This is a very interesting point of view. I think the definition of conservatism can sometimes be subjective which is where people run into disagreements about this topic. Personally, I think both conservatives and liberals can be intellectuals but would agree that often the progressive nature of liberals leads them to be more open-minded and…[Read more]
Christmas is right around the corner, friends. The holiday season is one filled with joy and excitement. You know what brings me joy and excitement? Conspiracy theories. Here’s some Christmas conspiracy theories
This is very interesting. I am a bit of a Scrooge myself and don’t live Christmas, or any holiday for that matter. The Germans have a Christmas tradition that I find pretty funny, der Krampus. Der Krampus punishes bad children by hitting them with sticks and takes them to the Underworld.
Here’s a link to an article I found explaining the history of the German tradition: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2013/12/131217-krampus-christmas-santa-devil/
I, too, am a lover of conspiracy theories. To think that Santa Claus might be the anti-Christ blows my mind. Since you brought this to light, I don’t believe I can look at Santa the same way again. One question though, how does Mrs. Claus tie into this? For that matter, how do the reindeer, elves, workshop, and the North Pole tie into this. If you could clear that up for me, I would greatly appreciate it.
I learned about plastic pollution in a class last year and it’s such an important environmental issue. It’s a great thing to write your paper on and you should make an update post after talking to those organizations!
I went to public schools that didn’t require uniforms until last year. I shared some of your concerns about expressing individuality when dressing identically to your peers. However, I’ve been required to wear a strict uniform for over a year now and have changed my mind completely. When everyone looks the same, it’s almost impossible to judge…[Read more]
This is a youth-powered publishing platform that was started in 2003 by a group of teachers from local sites of the National Writing Project.
We merged several earlier blogging projects. We have found that there are many advantages to bringing students together in one site that lives beyond any particular class. It’s easier for individual students to read and write about their own passions, to connect with other students, comment on each other’s work, and create multimedia posts for each other. Further, it’s been exciting for us to pool our knowledge about curriculum, connected learning, and digital literacies.
There are over 8,000 posts and over 13,000 comments by young people on the site on topics as diverse as the American Dream, Shakespeare, and sports as well as original poems and stories.
Youth Voices is a platform for youth to write about their interests, both in school and outside of school: what they are reading, what their hobbies or future careers might be, what they enjoy in their spare time. Like all of us, students follow our national leadership and form opinions. They are also welcome to write about those topics as well.
Youth Voices is fully non-partisan and welcomes youth of all types, from all regions, and with all viewpoints. Educators support youth in writing and thoughtfully responding to each other through the use of commenting guides, using tags to show common interests, playlists to support self-guided inquiry; opinions expressed by writers are their own.
If being part of such a community makes sense to you, we invite you to join us. We welcome all youth and any teacher interested in having students publish online and participate in the give and take of a social network like Youth Voices.
