  • In the state of North Carolina, charter schools receive significantly less funding than the average district public school. Why is that? Through the exchanging of emails with state officials, I have personally

    • Very good question Madalyn. I’m not sure about North Carolina, but according to an article on The Washington Post, charters school in D.C. receive less funding then the average public school because they pay based on the enrollment, and the average public school is much larger than the the average charter school. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s right though, as Charter Schools do have to pay for costs public schools don’t need to pay for, like the upkeep of the campuses, legal needs, and retirement, which leads to more money being sent to public schools to pay for this. Maybe if you continue asking public officials you can find out if North Carolina also uses a formula system, and going to the lawmakers themselves is a very good idea to learn about issues like these. Good job!

    • Madalyn,

You propose a very interesting question. I like how you brought up that students are asking for change. Maybe you should explore what kind of change they are asking for or why charter schools don’t get as much funding. Great job!
