Equality in America

About us

This is a youth-powered social network and multimedia publishing platform that was started in 2003 by a group of teachers from local sites of the National Writing Project.

We merged several earlier blogging projects. We have found that there are many advantages to bringing students together in one site that lives beyond any particular class. It’s easier for individual students to read and write about their own passions, to connect with other students, comment on each other’s work, and create multimedia posts for each other. Further, it’s been exciting for us to pool our knowledge about curriculum, connected learning, and digital literacies.

There are over 10,000 posts and over 17,000 comments by young people on the site on topics as diverse as the American Dream, Shakespeare, and sports as well as original poems and stories.

Youth Voices is a platform for youth to write about their interests, both in school and outside of school: what they are reading, what their hobbies or future careers might be, what they enjoy in their spare time. Like all of us, students follow our national leadership and form opinions. They are also welcome to write about those topics as well.

Youth Voices is fully non-partisan and welcomes youth of all types, from all regions, and with all viewpoints. Educators support youth in writing and thoughtfully responding to each other through the use of commenting guides, using tags to show common interests, playlists to support self-guided inquiry; opinions expressed by writers are their own.

If being part of such a community makes sense to you, we invite you to join us. We welcome all youth and any teacher interested in having students publish online and participate in the give and take of a social network like Youth Voices.

  • Antonio on Empathy with Covid-19
  • Shaliyah on i feel bad that he cant be in the baby's life and that hes not getting any justice in the courts
  • Shaliyah on i also think her dad just worried about her and her happiness,i dont think hes asking it to be funny or anything
  • Shaliyah on yes, sometimes you have to ignore negativity and focus on yourself bc not everyone isn't gonna like the decisions you make sometimes
  • Luisa on he was scared of his bodily changes
  • Tasneem on The War in Yemen
  • Shaliyah on i so agree with you on this!!,especially the part were u said anything can come off as bad because of her skin color
  • Shaliyah on that exactly what i said, your age shouldn't make you wanna or not wanna get married you should do it because you know your ready for commitment
  • Heather on Opinion
  • AlexR on he was being very protective because they were walking past “whites” and cops
  • Luisa on I agree and I also think maybe she went to the police and said she was raped and the police and her lied and put the blame on Fonny.
  • Heather on I can hear when he used the words “She wore high heels, too, which made a certain sound, something like a pistols.”
  • AlexR on i think this shows that he is being nice because he wants her to be distracted
  • Heather on I find it interesting that James Baldwin would include this poem into his book.
  • AlexR on how are they going to provide for each other financially at a young age?
  • AlexR on I think the truth should matter due to the fact that people who are innocent can get into jail due to bribery and other things, this also goes for people who are guilty.
  • Steven on fonny is a good person
  • Steven on ask to marry
  • AlexR on she seems kind of mad in this line. She also seems worried for Tish
  • Luisa on I agree with you because parents want their kids to marry somebody with a stable job because they don't their kids to have to suffer.
  • Steven on the mother was furious
  • Hai-Cheng on why does ms.hunt hate tish?
  • Hai-Cheng on I don't think that Fonny believes in Mr. Hayward. I believe in this statement because of his reaction to Tish's question.
  • Amra on agreed
  • Hai-Cheng on I think the hunt family has bad experiences with white people. This is because of their trust issues with white people.
  • Amra on Question
  • Hai-Cheng on I think James meant that Daniel was running out of friends. The words familiar faces means friends.
  • Amra on Why?
  • Hai-Cheng on I don't think that they will find her because of the amount of power the D.A has. Also because of the color of Fonny's skin.
  • Kaimea on I agree
  • Bethzy on yeah I agree, I don't think she should wait until the oldest sister gets married for she can married. I think the oldest sister should get married when she feels ready and found the one.
  • Kaimea on I think her dad loved both of them the same, but he shows it using different ways.
  • Drew on It must be hard for the woman to go about, knowing what the men do.
  • Kaimea on Tish and her family are willing to spend money to get Fonny our of jail
  • Drew on I'm glad that Fonny makes her feel good about herself, instead of pushing her down about her features.
  • Kaimea on Tish's mother is a very good mother
  • Drew on (Question) What did the Dad (When they were younger) do to make them feel like he loved one sister more than he loved the other?
  • Dehao on Being a great friend towards someone when their feeling down
  • Dehao on Yea even if you were after someone it would be better for you to also focus on yourself as well
  • Kaimea on I think Tish is saying that her mother is a beautiful person not based on the society's standards
  • Dehao on I agree she shouldn't be since when your pregnant it'll be very dangerous if you get hurt in some sort of way
  • Drew on I agree, Especially since they were walking past “whites” and cops. Racism was a big issue at the time, and still lives on today.
  • Dehao on Yea i agree but i think it wouldn't be right for her to sell herself even if it meant helping fonny because i believe fonny wouldn't want that as well
  • Ian on Question
  • Drew on I also agree, they don't allow other people's doubt, to come between them. They just keep moving because they are confident in themselves.
  • Dehao on That there isn't a call to loud for freedom which makes sense because freedom should be something everyone should have expressed with people being loud or quiet
  • Ian on Opinion
  • Drew on I agree, there mindsets are so much alike. Probably one of the many reasons they click.
  • Ian on What does he mean when he says they are taught to despise themselves from the moment their eyes open on the world?
  • Ian on I agree with you because there is no actual freedom because not everyone is free. He is talking about the African American people because they still weren't truly free at that time.
