About us

This is a youth-powered social network and multimedia publishing platform that was started in 2003 by a group of teachers from local sites of the National Writing Project.

We merged several earlier blogging projects. We have found that there are many advantages to bringing students together in one site that lives beyond any particular class. It’s easier for individual students to read and write about their own passions, to connect with other students, comment on each other’s work, and create multimedia posts for each other. Further, it’s been exciting for us to pool our knowledge about curriculum, connected learning, and digital literacies.

There are over 10,000 posts and over 17,000 comments by young people on the site on topics as diverse as the American Dream, Shakespeare, and sports as well as original poems and stories.

Youth Voices is a platform for youth to write about their interests, both in school and outside of school: what they are reading, what their hobbies or future careers might be, what they enjoy in their spare time. Like all of us, students follow our national leadership and form opinions. They are also welcome to write about those topics as well.

Youth Voices is fully non-partisan and welcomes youth of all types, from all regions, and with all viewpoints. Educators support youth in writing and thoughtfully responding to each other through the use of commenting guides, using tags to show common interests, playlists to support self-guided inquiry; opinions expressed by writers are their own.

If being part of such a community makes sense to you, we invite you to join us. We welcome all youth and any teacher interested in having students publish online and participate in the give and take of a social network like Youth Voices.

  • Alexis on i agree you can't change what's ready been done
  • Alexis on agree
  • Alexis on i agree with you his parents relationship was abusive and disgusting.
  • Angie on Maybe Ernestine felt that their dad didn't love her as much as he loved Tish because he showed his love and care for both of them in different ways.
  • Alexis on Even though he shows it in a rude way he really cares about his son and he wants him back.
  • Angie on I feel like when Joseph says “Look. We got to be nice,” he means that even though they may not like the Hunts that much they should still have some type of bond with them since they are related to the father of Tish's baby.
  • Bethzy on Fonny seems so loyal, he seems to be really in love with her.
  • Bethzy on Fonny is being such a gentlemen by taking her to her house and making sure she gets there safely.
  • Bethzy on yeah that is true it does seem to be like a love and hate relationship with Tish's family and Fonny.
  • Bethzy on This shows how much he really adores and loves Tish and how he scared someone would take Tish away from him.
  • Angie on I feel like when Tish mentions
  • Angie on “with these hands he attacked the keyboard like he was beating the brains out of someone he remembered.”
  • Angie on I'm guessing since he probably worked far away for a while he wasn't able to really spend time with Tish, so the news might be a bit of a shock to him.
  • Nico on its nice that they are celebrating that they are gonna have a new family member. They want to make Tish feel supported
  • Nico on they seem to get a lot of harassments from people but their family is still supportive and that's what matters
  • Nico on He is saying that the white man likes hearing the black man suffer. He is fed up and trying to show how the white man is affecting black people
  • Nico on This shows Fonny cares for her. He is truly in love.
  • Nico on her characters confidence develops in the end showing her character building over time
  • Gerardo on Body positivity
  • Cristian on Why people are protesting and getting mad at the death of innocent Black people
  • Drew on Fonny is being such a gentlemen by taking her to her house and making sure she gets there safely.
  • Drew on Tish's mom is very supportive about fonny and tish's baby.
  • Amra on agree shes a strong women.. that could be really stressfull
  • Mario on Question
  • Ocean on The author is saying that he became an preacher and I think he chose this job because he wanted to excel at something and he was bored, But another reason is maybe James wanted to be distracted from all the gang related issues
  • Ocean on If there story is in NYC why is the book called If Beale street Could Talk?
  • Ocean on This sentence makes me think that Mrs Hunt want's Fonny to be in jail, what makes me think that is the sentence where she says” I think this is the Lord's way of making my boy think on his sins. What sins?
  • Ocean on This reminds me of the Kalief Browder case were a black man was accused of stealing a back pack and was sent to Rikers Island for 3 years. He never stood trial or was found guilty of any crime, he spent three years in prison.
  • Ocean on This is a very explicit comment but I think what Daniel is saying is that the white man gets pleasure from hearing the black man suffer. I think Baldwin is talking through Daniel and is sharing his views as a black man, and what the white man has done to
  • Ocean on I think this shows that she has a lot of anxiety about something happening to Fonny. The dreams you have have some truth about your thoughts.
  • Rojo on familys were bigger back then
  • Rojo on society has changed a lot since then
  • Rojo on baby causing alot of stress
