Thank you so much for writing this post. I agree, these wildfires have been a consistent problem in Australia that needs immediate action. The wildfires are a direct effect of global warming which has become an international problem that needs the participation of everyone. Global warming is an issue that affects so many things on Earth:…[Read more]
While doing research regarding the issue of childhood hunger in the U.S., I came across an article titled, “Why Can’t America Solve the Hunger Problem?” that noted how food banks may not be as beneficial as we pr
I completely agree with you Bella. This is a very interesting problem that I have never considered, but makes a lot of sense. A constant giving to those in need without implementing a way for them to change their ways or sustainability for them and their possible families. Your point on only supplying housing to people for a couple of months is very good because afterwords they will most likely be in the same position as before. Awesome ideas and can’t wait to read more!
I agree that having a plant based diet has environmental benefits. Factory farming can emit more greenhouse gases which accelerates the process of climate change. I do believe that converting everyone to completely cutting meat out of their diets is quite a difficult task. However, as you said, small steps can be made such as the…[Read more]
Childhood hunger is a problem that is often overlooked in the U.S. even though millions of children experience it in our country. I decided to look at 3 additional sources regarding the legislation that will lead
Thank you for sharing your story of how you immigrated to the U.S. from Canada. My parents also immigrated from Canada, and I am a dual citizen of both countries as well. There is definitely few differences between the two countries as both have similar cultures, but I have found that even though discrimination exists everywhere, it is…[Read more]
I agree that the lack of sex-education is a problem in the United States. In order for teen pregnancy rates to decrease, there needs to be a spread of awareness to prevent this problem. Young women across the world need to be educated, and the fact that 90% of teens who get pregnant drop out of school is shocking. The United States should…[Read more]
Your post was very informative about the state of air pollution in Oakland and I found it very interesting. This was mainly because I live in Salt Lake City where we have much air pollution as well. Having pollutants in the air which become trapped when we experience an inversion, it becomes dangerous as people can develop respiratory…[Read more]
I do support the claim that college tuition has become increasingly high as of late, and that there needs to be a means to take action to resolve this issue. I found the concept of using high school credits to cover college credits very interesting as this would amount to less time in college, and a lower tuition. Student debt is also a…[Read more]
College tuition in the United States has increased exceptionally since the 1980’s leaving many American students seeking for a cost-effective way to pay for a college education. The concept of student loans has
I agree that standardized testing is heavily weighted in the US especially with regards to the SAT and ACT and getting into university. I also agree that an individual’s academic growth is not taken into account when looking at their standardized test scores. I believe that an individual’s transcript is much more explicative of…[Read more]
As someone who also has anxiety, I admire your courage to talk about your story. I agree that there are stigmas in society about mental health, but by educating and spreading awareness about mental health to the public, we can diminish these stigmas. Reading your article made me feel less alone, and I believe that your article is capable…[Read more]
I also read the book Orange is the New Black, and I watched the Netflix show as well. I loved this book and I’m glad it resonated with you too. I believe that this book illustrates what an urgent problem mass incarceration is in the United States coming from Piper’s perspective as a woman who was in prison. I liked how you connected…[Read more]
Matthew, I think it’s really fascinating that you created a blog raising awareness of the dangers of plastic in the ocean. Our waste not only affects our own lives, but the marine life as well. I agree that we need to make a conscious effort to improve our environment, especially managing our waste that ends up in the ocean, in order to improve…[Read more]
Wesley, I thought that your article was very informative about the importance of federal funding towards NASA. I agree that NASA is a significant and innovative agency in the United States and it makes sense that we should want funding to go towards it in order to progress advances in technology. The quote, “Without NASA we would not have memory…[Read more]

Jana, it makes me so happy that there are people like you in the world who are spreading awareness of immigrant mistreatment. It seems that in recent years, there has been such a negative bias towards immigrants, when in fact, being exposed to multiple cultures and customs makes us more open-minded people to new perspectives and ideas. Being a…[Read more]
I agree wholeheartedly that climate change is a serious problem. It has been placed on the back burner for years, but seems to have come into fruition only recently. It goes without saying that climate change is something everyone should care about as this is a topic that affects the public health and the overall well-being of people on Earth. Not…[Read more]
Gun control is a topic in the media almost every single day in the U.S. and one that I am interested in personally. Mass shootings in the United States have become an epidemic as they occur on a daily basis in
I am surprised by his publication “Mass shooting: a contemporary epidemic”
Because gun control is a daily issue in the United States, mass shootings in the US have become an epidemic. One phrase you wrote that stands out to me is “there must be some progress in the reform of weapons in the United States. I think this is something of concern because while the US is the country where the shootings happen the most, I think they should not allow young people or the general public not to carry weapons.
Thanks for your writing. I hope to see what you write next because I want to learn more about the society that exists in the US …
This is a youth-powered publishing platform that was started in 2003 by a group of teachers from local sites of the National Writing Project.
We merged several earlier blogging projects. We have found that there are many advantages to bringing students together in one site that lives beyond any particular class. It’s easier for individual students to read and write about their own passions, to connect with other students, comment on each other’s work, and create multimedia posts for each other. Further, it’s been exciting for us to pool our knowledge about curriculum, connected learning, and digital literacies.
There are over 8,000 posts and over 13,000 comments by young people on the site on topics as diverse as the American Dream, Shakespeare, and sports as well as original poems and stories.
Youth Voices is a platform for youth to write about their interests, both in school and outside of school: what they are reading, what their hobbies or future careers might be, what they enjoy in their spare time. Like all of us, students follow our national leadership and form opinions. They are also welcome to write about those topics as well.
Youth Voices is fully non-partisan and welcomes youth of all types, from all regions, and with all viewpoints. Educators support youth in writing and thoughtfully responding to each other through the use of commenting guides, using tags to show common interests, playlists to support self-guided inquiry; opinions expressed by writers are their own.
If being part of such a community makes sense to you, we invite you to join us. We welcome all youth and any teacher interested in having students publish online and participate in the give and take of a social network like Youth Voices.
