Meat is a main staple in many American’s diets today. An average American eats up to 200 lbs of meat per year. The question is ” is it good or bad for your health to eat meat?” Meat specifically red meat is known to cause heart disease and cause cancer. The meat you buy from the store isn’t what you think it is. In a meat factory they produce meat at a high rate. The cows, pigs and chickens are taken off a overpopulated farm where they are raised at a faster rate than normal and shipped off to the factory to be slaughtered for meat. In the factory the meat processed and then washed by a chemical called ammonia. After it is packaged and sent off to the stores. This is what causes problems with our health.

Not only does it impact our health but, the production of meat has a big impact on our environment. Livestock requires more food, water, land and energy than a plant does. It also wastes tons of water to produce meat in a slaughter house. The chance of getting sick is very high too. E. coli is a common sickness people get from eating meat. Americans get E. coli because of how many different types of cows are in one hamburger.

The consumption of meat is becoming a problem in our country and we need to find an alternative way to reduce the amount of meat a person eats daily.

Samantha,
What you have to say is an important issue that we as a society needs to address before it gets taken out of hand, which it seems like it is already to that point. My favorite point that you made would have to be how much water we are using into slaughtering animals– it is ridiculous and we need to come up with an alternative. Something that I learned that I never knew about is that they mix different cows into a hamburger.

Thank you very much for educating me! Can’t wait to hear what else you come up with!

I couldn’t agree more. Industrial meat farming is truly a terrible thing. They are pumping out massive amounts of nasty meat that Americans blindly devouring and it’s wrecking the environment at the same time. I think the book Eating Animals by Jonathan Foer would really help you out with your research. It talks about the tole industrial farming takes on the earth, the process of raising and preparing the meat, and especially the horrible conditions the animals are living in and their gruesome slaughter. If you ever want to take a look at it let me know because I’ve got it checked out from the library right now.

This is really interesting! It’s kinda scary how they prepare meat before it reaches grocery stores and how it is usually considered “healthy” in our society.
