“Yang Kai, I want to teach you how to ride the bus,” my mother said. “Tomorrow you go to school by yourself”. It was a hot day. We walked through Sunset Park to the bus stop on 5th Avenue. “You need to look at the bus number. Some buses don’t go to your school. You need the B63.” When the bus got to the bus stop it was crowded and moving fast. The bus stopped and the people got down. I got on the bus with my mom and we found seats. And then the bus took us to the bus stop close to the school.
My mom and I walked into the school. It was the 1st day of school and there was a long line of students. Next, Mom took me to the elevator and up to the 4th floor .“Yang Kai, I want to teach you how to ride the bus,” my mother said. “Tomorrow you go to school by yourself.”
On the 4th floor, we met with a teacher that showed us around the school. Mom left the school shortly after that. I stayed for orientation which was 1 period. Before she left Mom said “always remember to use your metro- card only one time. Don’t lose your metro- card. The school won’t give you another one. I then went up and the teacher walked with me to the classroom. The teacher gave me a jacket that had the school logo on it “Park Slope collegiate.” After that, I walked back to the bus stop by myself.
After school, on the way home there was no space on the bus. There were students from a different school in the back of the bus. They had walked on the back door without paying.
When I think back to that moment I was so nervous. Ever since that day I’ve taken the B-63 by myself to school. Today, I’m in 10th grade doing well.
