I wanted to read a book that was interesting and had a bit of mystery to it, that is why I started reading “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer. This book is about a man named Chris McCandless and how he decided to throw away his normal life for one with adventure. In this book, we meet the people who knew Chris and what they thought of him. Chris was a smart guy who wanted to live off the grid. Chris gives away all his things, donates his money, and changes his name to Alex. Chris doesn’t contact his family (Who eventually hire an investigator to find him) and only creates temporary relationships with the people he meets on his journey. He then goes on a big adventure across the country. Eventually, he goes to Alaska and tries to camp out there, but he was later found dead. The book goes through what Chris was thinking during the time of his adventures through the Journal they found on him. I think integrating Chris’s own writing brings the book to life and makes you remember that the book is about a real person who had a family and had emotions like everyone else. “S.O.S I need help. I am injured, near death, and too weak to hike out of here. I am all alone this is NO JOKE. In the name of God, please remain to save me. I am out collecting berries close by and shall return this evening. Thank you, Chris McCandless. August?” (pg 12, Into the Wild). I find this book very interesting and I think it is perfect for those who love the outdoors. We are introduced to many people who met Chris in his life, especially near the end of it. It feels like the reader is investigating these people trying to understand Chris better. I highly suggest this book to anyone looking for a good read.
