Individualism is where it is at.
Sometimes; no, make that most of the time, we take ourselves too seriously. Society is always trying to define how we as humans should fit into predetermined behavioral categories based on the set of circumstances in which we find ourselves. Rather than viewing a particular person’s conduct as being different than the remainder of the group, we should really be celebrating the fact that we are not all the same. Individualism needs to make a comeback.
Can you imagine what it would be like if every student in any one of your particular school classes were exactly the same? There would not be that one blonde girl who out of the blue one day just showed up with literally neon pink hair. The guy in the back that continually throws paper airplanes that hit the whiteboard whenever the substitute teacher turns her back to the class, would cease to exist. And, of course the “brainiac” student that has continual arm spasms which cause his or her arm to always be raised to answer the question before it is even posed by the teacher, would be missing as well.
Each of us have at least one characteristic that differentiates us from the rest of the crowd. It is not uncommon for everyone in the class to be unaware of the individual talents, abilities, and secrets of the person sitting right next to them. Why do we keep these secret? It’s because we are embarrassed due to the fact that it makes us different from the rest of the class. This is a problem that is caused by the desire to fit within the societal norm rather than express our individualism. Somewhere along the way, the desire to fit in over powered the more important aspects of our life that distinguishes us from the rest of the race.
It’s time for individualism to make a comeback. Now’s the time – reach over to the person in the seat next to you, and tell them about the fact that you have six toes on your right foot. There’s no need for you to just one of the crowd, be an individual instead!
