In the article “Could You Pass the Citizenship Test?” I learned that immigrants work hard to study to get citizenship in the United States, and how easy it is for immigrant parents that have children born in the United States to get automatic citizenship. People who got citizenship automatically take it for granted and don’t really know anything about America. Immigrants who want citizenship have to go to classes and learn English and the history of the united states. high schools are starting to make students pass a civics test so they learn more about the U.S.
My reaction to this is sad because immigrants have to study and learn a lot of things to become U.S citizens. In my opinion, I think they should at least learn how to speak English to become a citizen. A thought I have is that immigrants want to come to the united states as soon as possible to have a better life here in the U.S, and taking the test will just slow them down. Another opinion I have is to let immigrants come into the united states and let them adapt to the country first, so when they take the civics test, it won’t be so difficult.
Do you think immigrants should go through the long process of the civics test?
