Sweden is known to be one of the best countries in the world when it comes to waste management with only approximately one percent of its waste going to landfills. So how is this possible? Where does it all go?
According to globalcitizen.com, there are two major explanations- incinerators and recycling. Home and business owners are diligent in their recycling, sorting their waste into recyclables and hazardous waste. From there, the waste is sent to WTE (waste to energy) plants or other recycling plants, excluding a single percent of the total waste which is sent to landfills. WTE plants play a very large role in Sweden’s disposal of waste, as it is burned to produce steam. The steam produced goes towards powering turbines to create electricity. It’s a clever process which releases significantly less harmful gasses and toxins to the environment, therefore making their country even greener. Hopefully some day the entire world will have as civilized a system of waste management, if not better. Maybe then we will have a greener Earth.
