I believe in hard work. Hard work never betrays.
When I was in middle school my dad recommended that I read the book ‘Outliers’ by Malcolm Gladwell. The book talks about how it takes approximately 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to be good at something.
Sure, there is some talent required to be successful in some areas, but challenges can be overcomed by hard work and perseverance. I’ve seen hard work done by the people around me and it surely does pay them back. This book shows that people need time to be a master at something.
When my grandfather was 18, he left everything in North Korea and came to the South because of the Korean War. He believed in the system of South Korean government. He had nothing. He couldn’t even finish school because he had to figure out his living. He worked at a store with his cousin and he managed to open up his own store later in life. He worked very hard and successfully raised three kids.
His story motivates me because he didn’t have the same opportunities that I have right now. I was given the chance to go around the world at a young age to learn and experience new things. I believe that anything is possible through hard work.
Everything is about how much work you put in, not what you start with. I experience this in school everyday. When I study hard for a test, I get good grades. Even though I was born in the United States, going to high school here was not an easy experience.
Since English was not my first language, it took me longer to absorb the materials. However, I tried to enjoy and persistently go through the process of learning. Now, I feel like I don’t have any problem learning in English. School has proven to me that hard work pays off.
However, with hard work comes sacrifice. I have to give up time to study. I had to give up an easier school life in Korea to study in America. No matter how hard these sacrifices have been, the hard work always pays off.
Hard work brings success that makes the sacrifices worth it. Hard work has taught me to believe that if you persistently work towards your goal, you will get there.
