In the article, “Gun control is the wrong debate” (Wenstrup 2022) I learned that gun control is not the proper solution to preventing gun violence. Most prisoners in federal prison were arrested with weapons of which they’d bought illegally. Having gun restrictions does nothing to prevent gun violence when people would find ways to buy guns illegally if they can’t buy one legally. Having gun laws will negatively impact people who are law-abiding and these laws that are being passed are done solely around innocent civilians. Passing gun laws because of criminals would affect law-abiding citizens from their second amendment right, making this an unfair situation. Certains bans like the 1994 law that banned the manufacturing of 19 weapons weren’t shown to be successful in preventing gun violence. Gun restriction doesn’t stop gun violence, so why should we have gun laws when it doesn’t prevent anything.
I believe that having gun laws is something we should have regardless of whether they actually prevent gun violence. Guns are such a dangerous item to just have and to allow the public to buy and carry.
As I continue to learn more about Gun laws, I want to know more about what laws are put in place to prevent suicides and accidental shootings.
