 Step 1

Fast and furious! Write:

  1. How do you feel about the poem itself? Do you relish it? detest it? appreciate it? WHY?
  2. What emotions does the text make you have? WHY ??

 Step 2

Love it or hate it, what’s one particular line or stanza in the poem that evokes those feelings in you?

  • Quote it.
  • What are the feelings?
  • Why this line or stanza in particular?
  • HOW does the line or stanza trigger this psychological response in you? What is it about the way it’s written – its DICTION (WORD CHOICE), OR SYNTAX (RHYTHM, TEMPO, REPETITION)? – that gets to you?
