A simulation compiled statistics from multiple reliable sources on incarceration and opioid use disorder. The model showed that a significant number of lives could be saved if there was availability of medication used to treat Opioid use disorder. Even more could be saved with the addition of post release treatment retention. This supports reformation of the way we treat addicts in prison and that rehabilitation is more effective than punishment.
