I feel that the event ‘A Day Without Immigrants’ actually made a difference. This event took place on February 16, 2017. In an article I had previously read called, “On a ‘Day Without Immigrants,’ Workers Show Their Presence by Staying Home,” shows many facts as to why this relates to how this event made a difference. Many people did stay home, either from school and/or work. Due to this, lots of students were missing from classrooms and businesses had closed. In the article I read it states, “In Washington, the Pentagon warned its employees that a number of its food concessions, including Sbarro’s, Starbucks and Taco Bell, were closed because immigrant employees had stayed home…” The fact that even stores closed, make us ask ourselves, how many immigrants do we actually have? Will this decrease our economy’s growth? If you think about it, many businesses will shut down since there will be not as much workers as before.

Dear Kyra
I am happy about your post “did a day without immigrants actually have an impact” because in a time where we have a President who is worryingly nationalistic and seems to only care about a small portion of the world’s, and america’s population, we need a day like this that highlights the importance of the people is monumental. The people that voted for Trump, and Trump himself need to understand that this nation was built by immigrants, and if you just ignore the interests of these people, you should see what the world looks like without them. One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is: “ Due to this, lots of students were missing from classrooms and businesses had closed.” I think this is important because it shows that without immigrants, is a day without a lot of important parts of america, business owners, and members of classes. It really highlights the importance of immigrants in this country. Another sentence that I liked was: “ Will this decrease our economy’s growth?” This stood out for me because it showed the more political side of this day. Yes it was an inconvenience to people who wanted to buy something from one of these shops but there’s more to it than that, no immigrants means a weaker economy means a weaker country. I do agree with you that this day had an impact. One reason I say this is that it showed people the importance of immigrants in this country. Another reason I agree with you is that it showed that protest can be peaceful and still get to the people they want to get to. Something as simple as staying home can have a massive impact. Thanks for your writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because your method of writing about this shown a light on the subject without going into so much detail that it was hard to read. Just the kind of articles that this website allows for.
Dear Kyra,
Your article, “Did “A Day Without Immigrants” Actually Have An Impact?”, should be brought up to awareness in our society. People should know that immigrants should be treated just as equal, and not be discriminated. Immigrants do make a difference in our country and work very hard. They deserve fairness and should not be banned from our country. I enjoyed reading your post, thank you!
Dear Kyra,
I am touched by your post, “Did ‘A Day Without Immigrants’ Actually Have An Impact?” because during 2017 we still are questioning whether or not immigrants should be in America. It amazes me that we still have to prove that immigrants makes America the country it is today.
This part stood out to me the most: “In the article I read it states, ‘In Washington, the Pentagon warned its employees that a number of its food concessions, including Sbarro’s, Starbucks and Taco Bell, were closed because immigrant employees had stayed home…’” I think this truly proves the idea that immigrants work hard for this country because I don’t think most people understand how many people are immigrants or are of immigrant descent.
Another statement that I found intriguing was, “The fact that even stores closed, make us ask ourselves, how many immigrants do we actually have? Will this decrease our economy’s growth? If you think about it, many businesses will shut down since there will be not as much workers as before.” This stood out for me because it forces people to come to a realization that immigrants actually have an immense effect on America’s economy.
Your post reminds me of something that is occuring in the present day. Not long ago, Donald J. Trump was announced president of the United States of America. His stance clearly opposes immigrants and their arrival in America. So I think publicising this event on social media was a wonderful idea of spreading the word about the importance of immigrants and how without them our country cannot progress.
Thanks for your awareness. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because before this post I had no idea that there was the event, ” A Day Without Immigrants”. This provided a great insight on the present problems we have as a nation.
Dear kyra,
I am intrigued by your post because it shows the need for immigrants in America. One thing that stood out to me was the fact that many stores closed down. This is because its interesting that the boss or manager would allow or tolerate this movement. Thanks for your project. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because it’s interesting.
Dear Kyra :
I am amazed with your post, ““Did a Day without Immigrants actually have an Impact?”, because it shows how a big part of our country consists of immigrants and that they are essential for our everyday life. I am amazed how there are so many immigrants in our everyday lives, some we may not even notice at first.
One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is: “In the article I read it states, “In Washington, the Pentagon warned its employees that a number of its food concessions, including Sbarro’s, Starbucks and Taco Bell, were closed because immigrant employees had stayed home…”. I think this is significant because if the Pentagon recognizes this movement, that says a lot since that is the capitol of our country and where our fundamental government is located.
Another sentence that I liked was: “The fact that even stores closed, make us ask ourselves, how many immigrants do we actually have?” This stood out for me because it is something I agreed with and is a question that should be asked by all citizens to make everyone realize how immigrants are one of the fundamental parts of our development as a country.
Your image reminds me of something that happened to me. One time I was walking through Manhattan and there was an anti- Trump rally going on, specifically about the topic of immigrants. They were chanting, “No hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here”. This reminded me about how some of my friends are immigrants and how my parents were immigrants. The protestors invited my family to join, which we did for a few minutes.
Thanks for your writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because your beliefs align with mine and I agree with what you said about immigrants. This topic of immigrants in America is very common to see on the news nowadays. In fact, it is being discussed by our very own president who signed an executive order blocking immigrants from 7 countries.
Thanks for your writing, Kyra. I also agree with the fact that the event, “A Day Without Immigrants,” really made a difference because it displayed how much of this country’s population is made up of immigrants and how different our country would be if immigrants never came to our country. Even if people say that protests like these won’t change a thing, they really can, because there have been many times in the past before where the purpose of peaceful protests were fulfilled, so it is nice to know you strongly believe in the thought.
Dear Kyra,
I am excited by your post “Did a Day without Immigrants actually have an Impact?” because I strongly believe that it did. There are many immigrants in this country. Therefore life would be very different without them.
One sentence that stood out to me is “Due to this, lots of students were missing from classrooms and businesses had closed. ‘, because if so many immigrants were absent, people would without a doubt notice how much immigrants add to the community.
Another sentence that stood out to me is “In the article I read it states, “In Washington, the Pentagon warned its employees that a number of its food concessions, including Sbarro’s, Starbucks and Taco Bell, were closed because immigrant employees had stayed home…” because it shows that large companies can’t survive without immigrants.
I agree with you that it made a difference because it showed how many immigrants are in this country. Also, it showed that immigrants are as important as anyone else to be successful.
I look forward to seeing what you write next because this article was something I could relate to my community.
Dear Kyra,
I agree with you I think a day without immigrants really showed that without all of these immigrants we have many things would go out of business and if they are forced to move back to where they were born a lot of things can and will most likely go wrong. Immigrants are a part of this world that make it better. They have to stand up for themselves and show our new president all the things that will go wrong if immigrants are forced to move back. The questions you asked are great because it really make us all think what would happen to the world if we no longer had immigrants.
Dear Kyra, I agree with you that it made a difference. Many people may have changed their view on immigrants after the boycott. As a result to show that America wouldn’t be the same without immigrants people didn’t go to work, children weren’t sent to school, businesses shut down, no buying was done by the immigrants, etc. In my opinion the economy would do bad if all the immigrants were sent back to their native land. Many work fields might decrease because the other people will not want to get paid minimum wage. Lots of immigrants work in the fields or packing houses the owners wouldn’t have as much people to do the job. Is deporting immigrants really a great idea for the economy?
Kyra,
This day was an incredibly powerful one. I think it really showed everyone how heavily we do rely on immigrants and that our country is made of them. Your questions at the end are certainly ones we have to consider if our country continues down its current path.
