In the article, “College Athletes: To Pay or Not to Pay” I learned that people are 50/50 on whether or not athletes should get paid for their work. This has caused a lot of conflict within the athletes, their coaches, and their parents. It has also caused a lot of conflict within other school. Because some schools do not have that amount of money to pay all their athletes. An example to illustrate the situation, is that my school would be paying their athletes for their work meanwhile another school would not pay their athletes for their work.

I think this is happening because a lot of people are indecisive on whether or not athletes should be paid or not. It must be overwhelming how unfair the situation is. Because some schools might not have enough money to pay their athletes.

Do you believe schools should pay their athletes?

Dear Sophia:

I am impressed by your post, “College Athletes: To Pay or Not to Pay?,” because it is a topic that isn’t talked about much. I do agree with you that it is unfair to the athletes that compete. I do believe that they should get paid as well.

One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is “This has caused a lot of conflict within the athletes, their coaches, and their parents.” I think this is important because the athletes know what they’re worth as well as their families and coaches.

Thanks for your writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because it’s a fascinating topic you wrote about. I hope you post more posts like this. They are very interesting.

Sophia,

Thank you for your post. Is this the same issue with paying college athletes with endorsement deals? I remember people got in trouble (maybe Zion Williamson) because someone signed a shoe deal with Nike during college but wasn’t allowed to gain any income? I’m not exactly sure about the specifics, but you should check that issue out in case it is connected. (Check this article out, it gives some info on endorsement deals and athletes). As for my personal opinion, I have no idea.

This is a really interesting topic, especially because people are so divided over it. I think on one hand, college athletes deserve to be payed because it is difficult to play a sport and take college courses at the same time. On the other hand, many schools cannot afford to pay their athletes, so I am unsure where I stand.

I think that college athletes should be reimbursed for deals they make outside of the school. The school grants the scholarship, so they shouldn’t be obliged to pay them, however, their hard work and consistency calls for some sort of payment.

I think this is a topic that is so rarely talked about but is a very important conversation to have! This made me think of federalism and how education is left up to the individual state’s discretion, which can create barriers to equal education among all people.

I like the topic choice and noticed that you applied your own opinion to the argument which is crucial when making a post like this. There are many issues that arise when talking about college athlete payment. I think they should receive money for certain aspects such as their jerseys being sold or anything that is put under their name. I like how you applied real world examples and hope to read more in the future.

Very good topic to talk about! I had a conversation about this in one of my classes last year and I made the point that college athletes should not be paid. I believe this because it is not a job. These students are going to college to get education and, if they want to be paid for a sport, they can choose to go into it professionally. Moving forward, I think you should continue to discuss issues similar to this because it brings a variety of opinions into the mix!
