In the article, “YOU DECIDE: Cars That Stop Drunk Driving?”  I learned that President Biden wants to demand U.S. automakers to find a way to stop drunk driving. They have been developing monitoring systems in cars, whether it be a breathalyzer or infrared cameras that would monitor a person’s behavior and will make the car slow down and pull over to the road if they see any risky behavior. Just as anything this has both pros and cons. The pros would be that there are so many deaths caused by drunk drivers and this technology could reduce the deaths to about 9,400 per year. Not only will it save lives but it will also protect first responders. However, in the article it also gives the cons which is that the devices are “impractical” and making a driver use a breathalyzer everytime they get into a car would be inconvenient. Also, monitoring systems may be unreliable, and it would take years for this technology to make a difference.

I think that if there is a way to stop all of the alcohol related deaths from happening, then the pros automatically outweigh the cons. So many innocent lives of adults and children are taken this way and hopefully this new technology could change that.

Do you think cars should be required to have anti-drunk driving monitoring devices?
