Every four years outrageous amounts of money are spent on annoying propaganda for basically only two presidential candidates. American elections are practically just a competition of who has more money–the Republicans or the Democrats. All political party presidential candidates should have a cap of spending 200 million dollars on their election campaign.
Having no cap for campaign spending forces the two most powerful parties to run our country. In modern day politics we have never had a president that was not a Democrat or Republican. In fact, the last non-main party president was in 1865 and that was just using a different name for the Republican Party at the time. This has occurred because those two parties are the only ones with enough funds to get their candidates seen by the public eye. As of October 19th Donald Trump’s campaign raised $795 million and Hillary Clinton’s campaign raised a staggering $1.3 billion. The closest two parties to the Democrat and Republican campaigns are Libertarian Party, which raised $12.7 million, and the Green Party who raised a mere $3.5 million. Having a price cap could close the advertisement gap between the haves– Republican and Democrats– and the have-nots, everyone other party.
This year a majority of our country is horrified by the two candidates for president. They believe the only two options are the most publicized people with the largest media base, yet there are many other parties including Libertarian Party, Green Party, and Constitution Party, just to name a few. If there was a cap then it would give a chance for other voices to be heard. This country was built on democratic values that emphasize the importance of every individual’s viewpoints and ideas. The people of this country could truly choose the best person to lead this country and not just the lesser of two evils.
