In the article, “Abortion in U.S. History” (2022) I learned about the way abortion has really affected women and it affected women of color, during the 1800s their body was never their own. If they had gotten pregnant by a white owner they weren’t allowed to abort the pregnancy. Many women had to use types of herbs in order to eliminate the pregnancy, doctors weren’t always as common, and not a lot of techniques were used at the time as medicine was discovered yet. In the article, it also talked about how the rich white women were mainly the women getting this procedure done as they had the money to pay for it even though abortion at the time was still “banned”. However, the woman of color really didn’t have the choice to eliminate the pregnancy unless it was done unprofessionally.
My concern about this information is that many women didn’t have the option to choose what they wanted to do with their bodies as they were like property to these men. It’s really devastating that many women had to go through these things back in the day, if you wanted to eliminate a pregnancy they either had to be rich white women or really brave in order to try and eliminate their pregnancy alone.
As I continue to learn about Abortion rights I want to know, why men have a say in whether women are allowed to get an abortion.
