Voting is a vital part of our democracy and I truly believe that everyone should have their own opinions and be able to voice them. The unfortunate thing is, many people are not able to voice their own opinions when it comes to election day. Many people are not able to hit the polls because they work a job that only pays them by the hour. For less fortunate people who need all the money they can get, this presents a big problem.
The United States should declare the first Tuesday after November 1st as a national holiday. This would allow those who are paid by the hour more time to go out and vote. If our society makes it harder for poorer Americans to vote on election day, then that means a large amount of the population is underrepresented. A federal holiday for election day speaks very truly to the phrase “liberty and justice for all.”
I truly believe that this method would not only help working class individuals but would also help motivate those who are apathetic towards voting. Voting should be something exciting and refreshing, not something dull and boring that you would do after work. We could make it a holiday to look forward to and respect in tradition, making the meaning of voting more honorable, because after all, voting is essential to our democracy.
