The simple answer is yes. Of course, every high student wants school to start later, but the science actually supports it. Studies have shown that when students get more sleep, that test score goes up. According to Vittana, “A loss of sleep disrupts the normal functioning of a child’s attention span. They can struggle to focus on their environment, sensory inputs, and the classroom. A lack of sleep creates a delayed reaction time, irritability, depressed mood, forgetfulness, clumsiness, and trouble learning new concepts.” Another positive effect later school starts can have is less dependence on caffeine. Caffeine can lead to chronic panic attacks and severe dehydration. It can also reduce car accidence for teens, driver drowsiness is responsible for about 100,000 car crashes every year!
However, there are some cons to school starting later. It can impact working families, most jobs start at around 8 o’clock. If school started later than that some students might not have a way to get to school. Later start times could also encourage teens to stay up later at night. It could also reduce access to resources like the library.
While the cons are just as valid as the pros, I think that the pros outweigh the cons because it could better the mental health of the student. That should be the main priority of schools. The cons are still happening with the 8 o’clock start time. I think it would just take some time to get used to it.
