Equality of opportunity is “ the idea that people ought to be able to compete on equal terms, or on a “level playing field,” for advantaged offices and positions”. In other words it’s the idea that everyone has the same possibility to do things no matter background, race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, social status, or anything else. This is one of the principals of the United States of America. Americans strive for that equality of opportunity at all times.
Although Americans strive for that equality historically it has never been there. Things like The Civil Rights Movement, The Civil War, Women’s Suffrage, and many other events, only proves it. By having this events in the country’s history it only shows how hard it is to achieve equality. As US citizens we pride ourselves in the equality already achieved, but we let that cloud what’s going on now.
Equality of opportunity does not happen when it comes to jobs, education, housing and many other aspects. If someone grew up poor they are very likely to stay there. That’s all because of the income inequality in the country. Right as of this moment the income inequality makes everything harder for the working class. They struggle to survive, and in most cases the families are forced to make very hard decisions such as insurance or school, all because they can’t afford both. How is that equality? While others get to live without worrying about food for the next day other people live worrying about dinner for their children. That is not equality, real equality does not exist, strive to achieve it. Maybe in the future the field can be more equal.
