My name is Arianna and I am a student who is working on a project with my friends to promote LGBTQ+ healthcare rights. This project is important to me because the overall effects of not having healthcare in this country can be detrimental to one’s health. Discrimination against a specific community of people because they are different unfair, especially if you work in a public practice and your job affects someone’s life greatly. My project partners and I have started Instagram and Twitter accounts, started a blog, and a petition to oppose the repeal of the Affordable Care Act because it protects the LGBTQ+ community from being discriminated against in healthcare environments. Overall, we have been very unsuccessful in attracting attention to our cause and gaining signatures for our petition.
We started this project in February and have written 70 blog posts urging people to sign our petition, we have written about the affordable care act and why is should not be repealed, what healthcare is and how people of the LGBTQ+ community are discriminated in healthcare environments, and how not having access to healthcare because you are discriminated against can be detrimental to your health. We have liked our petition in our blog posts and even made multimedia presentations informing people about the need for LGBTQ+ healthcare rights. Overall, we have had 50 views on the homepage of our blog but have not received comments, likes, or followers.
Our petition has received 27 signatures since we have created and promoted in February. On our Instagram account @lgbtq_healthcare.love we have posted every time we created a new blog post and lave linked our blog in our accounts biography. On Instagram, we have 41 followers so not all of our followers have signed our petition, showing we have not been successful in convincing people to sign it. Our Twitter account, @LOVE_HEALTHCARE has 3 followers.
The lack of signatures on our petition compared to our total number of followers on social media shows we were not successful at promoting our cause. Our lack of comments, likes, or followers on our blog also show we were unsuccessful. To improve our project, we could have tried to connect with those who have similar interests and try to be promoted by others who could help us gain the interest of possible signers.
