Music is as old as time it seems. For as long as anyone could remember, music has been been made and created for a myriad of different reasons. Whether it be for entertainment, to prove a point, bring awareness to an issue, or just because someone felt bored. Music is one of the most subjective topics in the entire world. There are endless different kinds of music and it seems almost as if no two people like the exact same music. But that’s beautiful in a way. It shows how different and unique everybody is. Whether people enjoy timeless classics from Mozart or Bach, immortal riffs at the hands of Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath, singing at ungodly speeds like Eminem or System of a Down, or even if you have no preference. Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion. While music has a tendency to bring us a sense of benevolence and joy. It makes us whole even if everything else is chipping away at us.
Even with how brilliantly unique music is, people do still find ways to mock and berate some types of music. Whether it be “demonic” (in regards to all types of metal), “boring and meaningless” (referring to rap and hip-hop), or “too slow and non-enjoyable” (while talking about any slow type of music), every genre of music has some sort of grudge held against it. Even though none are deserved or needed.
Music is a way for people to express themselves. It is insanely important because it is one of mankind’s greatest creations. It has been passed down through the ages and, no matter the type, is absolutely brilliant. It’s art. The most important artform, if I had to pick it. It is used for so many different things and appeals to everybody. If somebody doesn’t like any form of music, that’s all I need to be convinced that they are a robot. Or have no soul. Either way, I wouldn’t trust them.
If you’re ever having a rough day or have nothing to do, grab an album and start listening. By the end of the album, given that you enjoyed it, I guarantee that you will no longer have the lingering feeling of boredom and/or will feel less down about things. If you didn’t enjoy it, just keep searching. There is always a genre of music that someone will like. No matter who you are, some type of music will appeal to you and will make your day a little brighter. If none do, then you are one of those soulless robots we were talking about earlier and shouldn’t be trusted.
