I am from water
From Fiji and Aquafina
I am from the chair overlooking the ocean,
sparkling, and cool with breeze that carried the smell of kelp
I’m from figs, green or black, soft but hard
I’m from lighting sparklers and eating sugar cubes
I’m from patience and anger
From respect and politeness
I’m from beliefs in a higher being
Texas born, Indian boy
From the mangoes, and the passion fruit
From the apples that fell off from the family tree
Under my bed lay a bejeweled box,
Containing memories frozen in time, paper thin
I am from these moments
