In reality, “American” means a ton of different things because it depends on your experiences and viewpoints on the world and this country. Although some might say america is built around freedom and the ability to express yourself, I believe that having freedom and expression is not always the case. This country was built by slavery and yes racism and segregation have gotten better but that doesn’t mean that they are gone. That is what I think holds america back from being a free country, gay rights, women’s rights and others are also holding us back. Being american to me means that your apart of culture that’s bigger than your own town or state or even coast. The film titled “American Creed” is about a marine whose name is Teagan Griffith and she talked about how the life of serving in the army or marines makes you apart of a community in the sense that whatever state she was in she had a place to stay and sleep because she had served. I think that this is important because Americans value putting your life in danger in order to protect others which is part of the meaning in the word “american.”
I believe “American” should represent the idea that there should be equality and fairness among everyone, because then there would be half the amount of fights and there would be no need to strike for rights like control over your body. The article titled “Russell Means Speech to the Senate” introduces the importance of culture to american indians and how if that’s taken away there will be nothing left for them. A quote from Russell Means says that “we can be anything we want except american indians.” I think that this quote shows the need for a more equal system for american indians and how this issue is one of many that america needs to work on because even if it doesn’t affect everyone it gives america a bad reputation.
American Literature can be defined as literature that has been written in the USA and can tell a story or deliver a concept. I think that american literature is written for everyone, I think that it’s written by Americans to talk about what they think american means and even if its not formally stating that it shows their view on life and the way they think, and because they live in america its their definition of the word “american”. THUG is a text that embodies the idea of being “American” because it’s about american problems and what it’s like growing up in the rougher parts of this country. In addition to THUG another piece of american literature is Superman and Me by Sherman Alexie. I believe that this is a piece of american literature because it has a lot of the same characteristics to Russell Means speech which talked about how american Indians are getting screwed. As a result of these two examples american literature seems like it’s a reflection of a minority overcoming a barrier or an obstacle.
