Racism is one of our society’s biggest issues, along with the existence of our patriarchy. Many people think that they’re separate issues, but they actually aren’t. When they’re used together, it’s called intersectionality. A good example of this that I always use is the wage gap. It’s not just a gender or race issue, because they work in coordination with each other. A female will get payed less than a male, and a person with a darker skin tone will get payed less than a person with a lighter skin tone. However, if there’s a female person of color, she’ll be paid less than a white female. It’s really frustrating how this plays out in our society, but there’s no way to change someone’s opinion on something, so all we can do is speak up and educate others on their (or other’s) mistakes
Unfortunately, this doesn’t only happen in a redneck, all-white trailer park. People have unconscious biases, whether they choose to acknowledge it or not. This can lead to activist groups backing farther away than what they’re fighting for. A great example of this is the women’s march movement. They preach tolerance of all and fight for women’s rights, but many women of color boycotted the march because the white women were too exclusive. This makes me very upset because if you want people to succeed, you need all people to succeed.
Unfortunately, this is an issue that can’t really be solved with any easy solution. It’s too widespread of an issue to do something all on your own. The best you can do is rise up whenever possible. Call out anybody who is degrading another human being for what they are. There’s no reason for there to be any discrimination between people, especially if it’s about something as uncontrollable and unimportant as skin tone and what gender you were born as. This also extends beyond race and sex and can be any set of discriminations combined, and some examples are disabled people (mentally or physically), non-binary people, and members of the LGBTQ+ family. There are many more I just don’t want to make a list.
All in all, intersectionality is a huge issue that many people overlook because they don’t even realize it’s happening. I wish people were more aware of this issue because I feel like we’re in the era of human life where there doesn’t have to be any discrimination and everybody works together, but sadly, we don’t live in a fantasy world.
To be completely honest, I’m not the most educated person on this topic at all. I could do more research online and see other cases of social justice warriors only looking out for themselves, and sometimes without even realizing it. I could also go to an upcoming march and just observe how everything works, or even interviewing people about this. Anyways, if you read this, I really hope you do your best to stand up to something wrong. We all see bad things happen, but not many people actually do anything about it. Anybody can be somebody that will do something about it, you just have to try.
