Women vs. The Man

For the article annotation assignment, I chose articles about Roe vs. Wade. Roe vs. Wade “established a woman’s right to have an abortion without undue restrictive interference from the government. The Court held that a woman’s right to decide for herself to bring or not bring a pregnancy to term is guaranteed under the Fourteenth Amendment.” (Dictionaryhttps://www.merriam-webster.com/legal/Roe%20v.%20Wade). I chose this issue because of the question of whether or not newly appointed Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh would overturn the bill. If abortion became illegal, then women would start going to less-than-reputable places to get the procedure done which is unsafe. So even if people disagree with abortion, it is at least important for it to be an option.

In a memo he wrote in 2003, Kavanaugh is quoted as saying that Roe vs. Wade can always be overruled by the Supreme Court. If the Roe vs. Wade law gets overturned, then abortion would become a state issue and would fall therefore under state law. While being very clear that he is not committing his vote publicly either way, Kavanaugh seems to see value in having some requirements on women being able to exercising her rights in regards to abortion. One would be to get parental consent if a minor wanted an abortion, or young women who don’t have parental guardians would have to meet with a consultant before getting the procedure. Both of these ideas would delay the abortion. (This is very slanted towards Kavanaugh and how he wants to present himself on the subject.) https://www.cnn.com/2018/09/05/politics/kavanaugh-roe-v-wade-planned-parenthood-casey/index.html

“In 1965, illegal abortions made up one-sixth of all pregnancy- and childbirth-related deaths.” In 2017, Planned Parenthood reported that Kavanaugh tried to prevent a 17-year-old immigrant girl in a Texas detention center from getting an abortion (which is different from the perspective stated in the CNN article which described Kavanaugh as being concerned for her well being.) This article also said Kavanaugh is reported as “dodging” the question of whether or not the issue of Roe vs. Wade is settled and his stance on right to privacy. This article also covers possible restrictions on abortion, the already existing ban on abortion, and touches on how Americans do not want Roe vs. Wade overturned (myself included). https://www.plannedparenthoodaction.org/issues/abortion/roe-v-wade
