My noble father,
I do perceive here a divided duty:
To you I am bound for life and education;
My life and education both do learn me
How to respect you; you are the lord of duty;
I am hitherto your daughter: but here’s my husband,
And so much duty as my mother show’d
To you, preferring you before her father,
So much I challenge that I may profess
Due to the Moor my lord.
I hold a great duty
You gave me life and education
I am your daughter
and must respect you
But this is my husband now
And i owe him like mother
did to you
So I must give myself
to my husband
Desdemona’s father has learned 0f her marriage to Othello from Iago. Othello comes into the scene to defend himself from her father. Her father believes that Othello forced her into marriage. Then she tells her father that this is her husband and that she owes him a great duty towards their marriage to one another. She states how much she loves her father and that he has brought her up in life with great education and respect, but now it is her turn to show her same respect to her husband as her mother once did to him.
Soft you; a word or two before you go.
I have done the state some service, and they know’t.
No more of that. I pray you, in your letters,
When you shall these unlucky deeds relate,
Speak of me as I am; nothing extenuate,
Nor set down aught in malice: then must you speak
Of one that loved not wisely but too well;
Of one not easily jealous, but being wrought
Perplex’d in the extreme.
I will not see you again let me speak before I die
I have been apart of this military, they know it
You have letters to prove it
Even though a terrible situation has happened today
Tell them exactly who I am, do not exaggerate that
Do not talk down of me through anger
Say i loved so much but wasn’t wise
As i was not jealous, but tricked into thinking i was
I was confused and uncertain by any means
