I am from  Philadelphia

from  my mother and my father South Philly born and raised

I am from “I  want you home before it gets dark”

and from actually going outside to play with friends

I am from  the grass I raced my cousins on around the corner at the park

Who sat right next to the freeway and we call it hunting park where I remember lots of my childhood

I am from  let’s go to gramma’s house that was just around the corner from mom’s house

from Mitchell and Kiah-El

I am from dark skin and long feet

and from wanting to hang with my older brother and their friends

from eating cheesesteaks from the Papi store across the street for dinner

I am from my aunt giving thanks to God and my Uncle giving his thanks to Allah

I am from Vivian, James and Ayanna

from baked mac and fried chicken

From the death of James and the birth of cousin Booda  that followed

and from sitting on the steps outside , playing red light green light and spending the night with cousins at grand mom’s house

I am from those moments

I am from Philly
