Yo soy Arely,

En una sociedad que necesita cambiar

I am Arely,

In a society that needs a change

I live in a immigrant’s household

I am the only girl out of three boys

I am a CHICANA

Education is my struggle but Interacting with my community is my passion

I am a very social person if the environment is not negative

I live in a very diverse neighborhood

Because its diverse I’ve learned that everybody shares the same struggles

But we don’t let that stop us

We fight as a community and don’t let eachother down

Violence has always been a part of my life

Rest In Peace

Brandon

Raul

Sergio

I could keep on going with my list but it will never end

I fight to make this community better for the violence to stop

I fight for the ones I lost which will never be forgotten

Living in Oakland has never made me forget about my culture

There is a lot of religious places where my culture gets together

The church

The sweat

The mosque

The temple

Having a diverse community helps keep my culture alive and learn different cultures

On a daily you see Africans and South East Asian,

Central and South Americans,

Caribbean and Europeans,

Arabs and Muslims,

Pacific Islanders and First Nation People

I speak english but mi primer lenguaje en espanol

This is a cultural thing that I share with these other cultures

“ Tu eres mi otro yo”

This is why I am proud to be an Oakland Chicana

It took me time to be a proud,

It took me time to love my people,

It took my time to care about myself

But now I thank the creature for making me who I am

And this will never change,

I am not afraid to speak up for the youth of Oakland.

Cause they think we are,

Criminals,

Dropouts,

Uneducated,

And Druggies.

But,

I believe that every youth have a voice

And if we all get together we could all change our fucked up society

And have the next generation not be afraid to speak their voice

I ride with revolutionists

Arely – This line really outstands me – “Living in Oakland has never made me forget about my culture.
There is a lot of religious places where my culture gets together. The church. The sweat. The mosque. The temple. Having a diverse community helps keep my culture alive and learn different cultures.” This relates to me because I also live in Oakland attend Unity High School and living in oakland doesn’t make a change for me and my religion. I really liked your poem keep writing revolutionist!

Arely – These lines really stand out to me — “This is why I am proud to be an Oakland Chicana // It took me time to be a proud, // It took me time to love my people, // It took my time to care about myself”. I’m glad you’ve made the journey toward self-care and pride. That’s remarkable! You certainly are a revolutionist! I hope you continue to do more for yourself and the community. You are a strong, powerful young woman.
