FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL IN 5TH GRADE
I DON’T KNOW WHO THESE PEOPLE ARE
I JUST MOVED FROM A DIFFERENT COUNTRY
AND I STILL DON’T KNOW HOW TO SPEAK ENGLISH
IF A PERSON SPEAKS TO ME I’LL EITHER SAY YES
OR JUST WALK AWAY
IT’S GOING TO BE AWKWARD BUT I HAVE NO CHOICE
I WENT IN MY FIRST CLASS
AND I HAVE NEVER FELT SO ISOLATED IN MY LIFE
THE TEACHER CAME AND TOLD US TO SIT DOWN
SHE TOOK ATTENDANCE SAYING NAMES ONE BY ONE
AND WHEN SHE PAUSED I KNEW SHE WAS GONNA SAY MY NAME
SHE SAID IT OUT LOUD
AND I HAVE NEVER HEARD SO MUCH LAUGHTER IN MY LIFE
I WAS SO EMBARRASSED
I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO SAY SO I JUST SAT THERE IN SILENCE
I DON’T KNOW WHO THESE PEOPLE ARE
