The FDA has yet to label marijuana as a safe medicine, despite the organization’s outward support for research of the drug, due to the unknown risks and side-effects of the drug. However, research about marijuana and the medicinal purposes it may have is against federal law, despite it being legal in eighteen states. According to the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, Marijuana is in the category with the most restrictive use. In order to use it in clinical research, one must have a DEA license and the study must be approved by the FDA.
